ILAE Sees The World! April 2016

Greetings esteemed friends of ILAE,

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, “There are three seasons in Ethiopia. From September to February is the long dry season known as the bega; this is followed by a short rainy season, the belg, in March and April. May is a hot and dry month preceding the long rainy season (kremt) in June, July, and August. We are currently enjoying belg; so, Happy belg!

This is not a climatology lesson on Ethiopia. Instead, it is a lesson about the saying, “nothing can stop an idea whose time has come”, and what that looks like in reality.

Just two and half years into ILAE’s existence as an operating school, Lydia TamiruTsegaye, a tenth grader is chosen to represent Rise Up’s Let Girls Lead, and participate in the Women Deliver Conference in Kobenhavn S, Denmark from May 7-15,2016“The Public Health Institute will provide Ms. Tsegaye with adequate funds for accommodation, meals, ground transportation and other travel costs.”

Three of our 11th grade students HaymanotTelahun, AbebeMisganaw, and Bethlehem Tesfaye are accepted into the prestigious Yale University Young Global Scholars (YYGS) program at the Yale University campus in New Haven, Connecticut from June 19 – July 2, 2016.  Hana Semuye, MatiwosAssefa, Nejat Beshir, and Laike G/Medhin, additional four are waitlisted. According to the university, “The applicant pool was the largest, most diverse, and most competitive group of applicants the Yale Global Scholars Program has ever received, representing over 115 different countries and all 50 U.S. states”. All seven of these students had earned solid 4.0s in the 10th grade national exam last year.

“The WALAB, a self-initiated Math and Sciences team of students from our 9th, 10th, and 11th grade levels, just completed the 4-day Addis Ababa city-level Math competition. Addis Ababa has 10 school districts. At the competition, 10 of the best schools from each district were represented; hence 100 schools competed city-wide. Our WALAB heroes won 1st place by presenting 3 new formulas they invented, yes, I said invented, and 1 existing formula they modified. Now, on to the national level competition.

Lastly, two students, Adugna Abubaker and Nejat Beshir have been selected to attend the Ashoka University week long program from May 22 to 29, 2016.

Congratulations!
